If you fancy a holiday in the Far-East, surrounded by pristine beaches with crystal blue water and white sand, as well as a 5 star hotel with a giant soft play for the kids, and plenty of perks for the adults, then this recommendation may be for you.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is located in the Malaysian island of Penang. Flights go via Kuala Lumpur, so travelling there with kids isn’t for the faint hearted. However, if you can deal with the stop over and make it work, a visit to the Shangri-La in Penang won’t disappoint..

The Shangri-La has a beautiful pool complex, which is very much suited to children of all ages, with shallow parts of the water and shade that our little one loved when we visited:

The beach right in front of the hotel is breathtaking. It’s expansive, and relatively unspoilt, and marvellously close to the resort itself:

And if you could top the pool and beach combo, the hotel has a giant soft play within the hotel that made those ‘the kid’s going crazy, what to do’ moments much more bearable!

Over our stay in Penang, we did manage to also squeeze in a visit to Georgetown, the capital of Penang which offers some cultural sites and street food restaurants that give the holiday some diversity if you want it:
