The island of Boracay in the Philippines has been out of action for six months whilst a large scale clean up took place, after decades of over-tourism & environmental damage. However, hot off the press.. the island is back in business now. Here’s what a friend of mine, currently visiting Boracay and staying at the Shangri La, has to say: “The island has had a good clean up, the roads are not finished yet but the beaches are very clean and they have massively limited the number of people who can get here by ferry. Much improved.”
So this brings me on to today’s blog post all about the magnificent Shangri La’s Boracay Resort, somewhere we had the opportunity to stay at before the clean up started.

What hit me the most when we arrived at the resort was the spectacular private beach and the extensive pool with multiple shallow ends for our growing brood.
The scenery at the hotel complex was so inviting, you hardly felt the need to venture out of the complex. You arrive at the Shangri-La by boat from the airport and from the moment you step foot into the air conditioned welcome lounge before embarking onto the speedboat, you experience the incredible warmth of the Filipino culture. The kids were beside themselves with excitement when we boarded the speedboat and they were made to feel special throughout our stay at Shangri La’s Boracay Resort.
My son was suffering from multiple allergies at the time, which the hotel masterfully catered for, making him whatever concoctions I asked them to, without question. Throughout the day, we spent most of the time by the pool, and it’s where my daughter learnt to swim. They had many float devices to hand which filled the days up pretty nicely, along with odd cocktail from the pool bar 🙂
There is also an Adventure Zone with an indoor drop slide and children’s activity corner for those moments when you need the kids entertained..
When evening fell, the magic continued. The hotel has a treetop bar complex which allows you to relax with the kids and view the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen.

To round off a wonderful holiday, we took a private boat trip out with the kids – I wouldn’t necessarily recommend doing this with such small children (!) but we did all survive it and that is chocolate ice-cream all over my daughter’s face yes.. needs must when you are trying to keep an excitable child happy in a boat 🙂
So that rounds off today’s blog post all about the Shangri-La in Boracay. I’d strongly recommend it if you are willing to trek all the way to Boracay (it will require a connecting flight from Manila, then the speedboat to the hotel be warned!). For us though, it was worth the travel.
